9 11 11 Project: A National Requiem of Remembrance
The Santa Barbara Choral Society and Orchestra will join choruses from across the nation in performance of the Mozart Requiem as a part of the 9 11 11 Project.
The 9 11 11 Project, a National Requiem of Remembrance, is a nation-wide choral initiative, begun by Santa Barbara Choral Society to commemorate the upcoming 10th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Similar to the Worldwide Rolling Requiem in 2002 on the 1st anniversary of the tragedy, the Requiem of Remembrance will roll the Mozart Requiem from coast to coast on 9 11 11 to wash a healing wave of music across our land.
The wave will begin, officially, at 3 pm along the eastern seaboard and roll hour by hour across America, until it culminates in the final performances of the day in Hawaii.
More than 60 choruses have signed on to sing Mozart’s immortal work, in individual or combined performances in their communities, to remember the nearly 3000 lives lost as a result of the attacks in New York, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania that day and to honor the service of the heroes who risked all to try to save others.
In the words of Victor Hugo, “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” The choruses of America have united to demonstrate the transformative power of music to give voice to the incalculable loss we suffered a decade ago and that, as a nation, we still feel.
